Butch Vig spent much of the ‘80s recording noise rock and hardcore. Tapped by Nirvana to produce Nevermind in 1991, he took his hard-edged approach to a larger audience than ever. In the early ‘90s, Vig produced alt-rock heroes like Sonic Youth and Smashing Pumpkins. He took a break in the late ‘90s to focus on his band Garbage, but later lent his blend of rawness and polish to Foo Fighters, Green Day and more.
