The Move made gleeful ‘60s sunshine pop with flashes of darker feelings. “Flowers In the Rain” and “I Can Hear the Grass Grow” explore the daylight dazzle of the psychedelic experience, while “Blackberry Way” and “Night of Fear” made melancholy pop out of the lonely comedown. Roy Wood's mastery of the plangent melody delivered childhood reminiscences (“Fire Brigade”) and social commentary (“Curly”) for the band to make bumptious fun with. They would later evolve both forward, into the hard-riffing black country rock of “Brontosaurus”, and backward, with the cheery rock ‘n' roll of “California Man”.
