Few Canadian acts come as funny or as frequently scathing as Mononc’ Serge. The Québécois singer, songwriter and poet—real name Serge Robert—has been writing tunes and playing to packed houses since the late '90s. He’s crafted more potty-mouthed ditties than you’ve had hot poutine, covering punk, rock, metal, blues and country along the way. His lyrics, while vulgar or sardonic, sometimes question Quebec’s identity. Celebrated tracks include 1998’s ode to potatoes, “Les patates”, and 2011’s Beastie Boys-esque rant “Le joual”, which highlights the pride the Québécois have for their language.
