About Spirit of Praise
Artist Biography
Since their inception in 2008, Johannesburg’s Spirit of Praise have become a gospel powerhouse thanks to their star-studded albums and energetic performances across South Africa. The collective’s multi-volume live sets feature a rotating cast of soloists and choir singers. Some of these collaborators, like pastor and composer Benjamin Dube and the angel-voiced Dumi Mkokstad, were already sitting atop their field when they teamed up with the Spirit Music Group-founded project. Others were up-and-comers who received major career boosts for their contributions; this was the case for the highly original Bucy Radebe, who joined the choir for Spirit of Praise, Vol. 7 in 2018. Yet the whole is always greater than the sum of its parts. What ultimately makes Spirit of Praise such a juggernaut is their blending of the trademark qualities of South African gospel—its rich cultural diversity, deep well of hope and legendarily elaborate vocal arrangements—with the family-like companionship and immaculate production values associated with contemporary praise & worship. The result is a Christian music that’s both uniquely Mzansi and profoundly universal.
