About KC and the Sunshine Band
Artist Biography
KC and the Sunshine Band walked the line between funk and disco on a string of dance-ready, horn-laced hits in the late 1970s.
• Founded in Florida in 1973 by Harry Wayne Casey, the band had seven Top 10 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 between 1975 and 1979, including five that reached No. 1.
• KC and the Sunshine Band broke through in 1975 with their second album, a self-titled effort that reached No. 4 and included the No. 1 hits “Get Down Tonight” and “That’s the Way (I Like It)”.
• Another pair of No. 1 hits came from the group’s third album, Part 3: “I’m Your Boogie Man” and “(Shake, Shake, Shake) Shake Your Booty”. A third single, “Keep It Comin’ Love”, peaked at No. 2.
• The steep fall-off of disco in the 1980s led to declining commercial fortunes for KC and the Sunshine Band, prompting Casey to retire in 1985.
• Casey reemerged with a new version of the band in the ’90s, spurred by renewed interest in disco. Though KC and the Sunshine Band’s three latter-day albums—released in 1993, 2001, and 2007, respectively—weren’t as successful as the band’s earlier material, the group has continued to tour.
