Artist Biography
A member of the durable Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio, pianist Joseph Kalichstein was among the top U.S. chamber music players of the 20th century. He was also active as a concerto soloist, solo recitalist, and educator. An early breakthrough for Kalichstein was a win at the Young Concert Artists competition in 1967. The following year, he appeared as a soloist with the New York Philharmonic under conductor Leonard Bernstein. Kalichstein's chamber music career began in 1977 when he, pianist Jaime Laredo, and cellist Sharon Robinson were engaged to perform at the inauguration of U.S. President Jimmy Carter. The three musicians formally established themselves as the Kalichstein-Laredo-Robinson Trio in 1981. In 1983, Kalichstein joined the faculty at Juilliard. He continued to perform as a soloist, and in 1987, he recorded the two piano concertos of Mendelssohn. Kalichstein died in Maplewood, New Jersey, on March 31, 2022.
