About Jacob Sam
Artist Biography
Jacob Sam (born Kwame Asare) became one of the first musicians from Ghana to record when his performance at. London's Kingsway Hall was recorded by the Zonophone label in 1928. Accompanied by the Kumasi Trio, featuring guitarist H.E. Binney and percussionist Kwah Kanta, Sam laid the roots of Central African music with gutsy, baritone vocals, lyrics in the Fanti language, and melodic, finger-style guitar picking. His best-known tune "Yaa Amponseh," which he and the Kumasi trio recorded three times, is a guitar-band highlife classic. ~ Craig Harris
