About Catherine Ribeiro
Artist Biography
About the same time that Brigette Fontaine started releasing records that combined the traditional French chanteuse style with more progressive music forms, Catherine Ribeiro was traveling a similar route over an experimental backing that could include folk-rock, progressive rock, improvisation, and more. After embarking on an acting career that included an appearance in Jean Luc Godard's Les Carabiniers, she began taking her singing more seriously. She cut two singles in 1966 before 2Bis joined her for 1969's Catherine Ribeiro + 2 Bis. No. 2 followed in 1970. 2Bis became Alpes, who backed Ribeiro on her next several releases. Meanwhile, she released solo tributes to artists like Edith Piaf, Jacques Prévert, and Sebastien Maroto, and collaborated with Peter Gabriel on 1982's Soleil dans l'ombre. By the early '90s, her output had slowed. Ribeiro went on to write a memoir, L'Enfance (1999), and occasionally staged concerts into the next decade.
