El Circo
Album · Alternative and Latin Rock · 1991
Celebrating the sharp-dressing, wild-living pachuco subculture, Maldita Vecindad brought crazy rhythms and wailing sax to the rock en español movement. That bravado is abundantly represented in their sound here—from shouted vocal choruses to high-stepping horns and frantic rhythms. But pumping basslines are their secret weapon: When not shaking it to the deep reggae of "Toño", the punkish "Crudelia" or the hyper-speed ska of "Pachuco", they kick out old-fashioned Latin pop on "Kumbala". And on "Mare", they practically invent flamenco funk.
