For Sonia Calico, DJing is a way to connect with people. “For me, a DJ set is like a bridge—the dance floor is one end and I’m the other,” she tells Apple Music. “Playing the right song is like erecting a bridge span. Once it’s set up, you’re able to share the music you love—and part of yourself as well.” The Taipei-based DJ/producer and founder of record label UnderU has taken a genre-fluid approach to music since starting out in electro-punk band Go Chic. “So long as it resonates with listeners, I can go from dance tracks to Afrobeats to C-pop,” she says. “Unlike mixes for online platforms, I deliberately switch up rhythms and tempos so the constant turbulence would keep people from getting stuck in a single mood. That’s how I make sure there’s energy on the dance floor.” Taking advantage of Spatial Audio technology for the first time, she became a fan of the immersive experience: “In addition to hearing music from different directions, you hear environmental sounds and the shouts of the audience.
