Schumann: The Symphonies
Album · Classical · 2022
This is Daniel Barenboim’s third recording of Schumann’s symphonies, and the second with the Staatskapelle Berlin, where he’s been music director for three decades. The opening of Symphony No. 1 is strikingly grandiose, signalling that Barenboim’s latest interpretations will be painted on a broad canvas. Even in the buzzing “Scherzo” of Symphony No. 2, he ensures the violins have sufficient elbow room to properly articulate, and the finale has an imposing splendour without resorting to rushing. The magnificent Symphony No. 4 has a sense of looming tragedy from the outset, with rich-toned, deeply expressive playing from the orchestra. These are wonderfully insightful performances and a fitting celebration of Barenboim’s 80th birthday.
