From the very beginning of his career, Accra-based Marince Omario has been developing his singular Fu style, which weaves together a rich mosaic of trap, R&B, drill and alt-pop while paying tribute to his Ga ancestry. Experimenting with a lo-fi, sombre sound, 2020’s Oblitey and Tsotsoo were homages to the grandparents who helped shape his life. But Ju Leebi—the Ga translation for “Monday morning”—hints at a new beginning, while presenting some of the singer’s most daring, genre-agnostic work. Across the project’s seven songs, Omario makes the transition from child to man and introduces the world to his idea of a new African revolution. “Wake & Praise” is an ode to life, buoyed by the spiritual roots of Last Born and BÈRD, which segues into the conflicted feeling of “Junior”, a conversation with a hero father he never got to meet. And then there’s “Character”, a vociferous cut that taps into the unique bounce of Ghana’s hip-hop scene. From song to song, Marince Omario’s grand vision comes into focus while exploring the strains and joys of adulthood.
