Born out of a tumultuous period and written between South Africa and Europe, Ruff Majik’s fifth album chronicles substance abuse, failed relationships and the fear of desertion and isolation. The newly cemented hard rock ‘n’ roll five-piece spin Queens of the Stone Age-inspired chord progressions and fuzzed-out tones, all from the colourfully warped viewpoint of lead vocalist and songwriter, Johni Holiday. While high-speed tracks (“All You Need is Speed”, “Heart Like An Alligator”) imbue this dystopian rock collection with twisted carnival tones, the South African group revels in the low, slow moments (“Gregory”, “God Knows”) where Holiday shines, showcasing his range.
